How do I stop bringing work stress home to my family?

Create a transition between work and home. Use your drive, a walk, music, a podcast, a shower or a change of clothes to reset your mindset before you see your family. Pair that with one non-negotiable block of family time where your phone is down and work calls wait.

Is work-life balance a myth?

Perfect balance usually is. Some days work will take more. Instead of chasing balance, set clear boundaries: a hard "done time" for work, one protected ritual with your family, and a clear rule for when interruptions are okay.

How can I decompress after work before I get home?

Do something between "Point A and Point B" that moves your brain somewhere else: music, a favorite podcast, a short walk or meditation, or positive affirmations about the people you're going home to. If you work from home, a walk or a shower can mark the switch.

How do I set boundaries with my kids when I work from home?

Treat work hours like you're "out making money." Explain which interruptions are okay, like time-sensitive or urgent things, and which can wait until you're done. Then protect the time they do get with you, like car rides and dinner, so they aren't competing with work calls.

How do I know if my job is hurting my family?

Watch for red flags: you come home irritated most days, your kids read the room before talking to you, vacation is the only time you feel like yourself, work keeps you up at night, or everyone in your life knows your toxic coworker by name. If none of the fixes help, the job itself may be the problem.

How do I know when to quit my job for my side hustle?

Look for a few signs together: your side hustle is consistently making money, demand is bigger than the time you have, you're turning down paying work because of your full-time job, you have repeat customers or recurring revenue, and you have savings plus a clear picture of your real business expenses.

How much money should my side hustle make before I quit?

Figure out your quit number first. Start with what you need to cover your mortgage, bills and life, then add what it costs to run the business: health insurance, business insurance, software, supplies, marketing and taxes. Revenue coming in is not the same as money you get to keep.

Should I start my side hustle small or go all in with an LLC and website?

It depends on your goal and your finances. Testing the waters lets you prove people will actually buy before you spend thousands on a website. Going all in can move faster but takes more money and effort. Either way, start with the minimum version of the business that can actually make money.

How do I build a side hustle while working full-time without burning out?

Treat it like a second shift with limits. Pick designated business nights or a set number of hours a week, give yourself a deadline like one year to reevaluate, and delegate the tasks you hate once the business can pay for help. It should be a means to an end, not a forever plan.

Do I want to start a business or do I just hate my job?

Ask yourself: if your job suddenly got amazing tomorrow, would you still want to build this? If the answer is no, you may need a different job rather than a business. Running your own business doesn't eliminate stress, difficult people, long hours or admin work, so you need to want the business itself.

What does it mean to play small?

Playing small means making yourself smaller than your skills and ideas deserve. It can look like undercharging for your work, staying quiet in meetings, not applying for the bigger role or waiting for someone to give you permission. It usually comes from fear of rejection or failure, and it often feels safe in the moment.

What are the signs you're playing small at work?

A big sign is rehearsing what you want to say in your head and then never saying it. Others include holding back ideas or honest feedback out of fear, pricing your work based on inexperience instead of value, staying in a role because it's comfortable rather than because you still want it, and waiting for someone to recognize your potential before you act on it.

What does playing small cost you?

Playing small costs you money, opportunities and growth over time. Undercharging leaves money on the table with every client, and not speaking up means you miss chances to make an impact that could lead to promotions and raises. The safe choice has risks too. They just show up on a longer timeline, like five years from now.

How do you stop playing small?

Start by keeping a written record of your wins, like completed projects, compliments and results, so you have proof when your inner voice tells you to hold back. Then go one size up: pick one place you've been making yourself smaller and do one thing this week, such as raising your hand, sending the pitch, applying or sharing the idea.

What ChatGPT prompt can help you see where you're playing small?

First ask ChatGPT to tell you five things it has learned about you through your conversations that you've never told it directly. Then ask it to identify one pattern in your work style, predict the next five years if that behavior continues, and predict the next five years if you fix just that one thing.

Why are companies mandating return to office now, years after COVID?

The mandates lined up with a shift in the labor market, not with health guidance. In 2021 and 2022, companies used remote work to compete for talent in a hot job market. Once layoffs picked up in 2024 and the market flipped back in employers' favor, companies gained the leverage to call people back in.

Is return-to-office really about productivity?

Not always. Some of it may be genuine collaboration or culture, but companies rarely explain their reasoning clearly. Other likely drivers include unused office real estate that's still being paid for, and managers wanting more visibility and control over their teams. If a job's expectations are clear and results are tracked, there's usually no real productivity case for being in a building.

What should I do if I was hired fully remote and now have to go back to an office?

Ask questions before you comply. Check whether your original remote agreement was documented anywhere, ask what "in office" actually requires, and ask directly about cost coverage like travel stipends or relocation assistance. You still have some leverage even in a tough job market, so don't roll over without asking what the company will do to offset the disruption.

What does returning to the office actually cost employees?

More than most people account for going in: gas, commute time, work clothes, eating out instead of eating at home, and before-and-after childcare. None of that shows up in the mandate itself, but it's a real financial hit that companies rarely offer to cover.

Can my employer legally force me back into the office if I was hired remote?

It depends largely on whether your remote arrangement was ever put in writing. Without a contract spelling it out, a company can generally set new expectations for the role. A documented remote agreement gives you more to point to if you want to push back or negotiate an exception.

What questions should I ask myself before choosing a career?

Instead of asking what you want to be, ask what you want your life to look like. Where do you want to live? Do you want to travel? Do you want kids, and how much time do you want with them? Do you want to work remotely? What does a random Tuesday look like? The answers will weed out careers that don't fit before you spend years chasing them.

Why don't I feel happy after reaching my career goals?

Because happiness isn't a destination. Many people assume that once they make it to CEO, partner or whatever the top looks like, they'll finally feel fulfilled. But if you've put everything into the climb and ignored the rest of your life, getting there can feel empty. Happiness comes from how you live day to day, not from a title.

How often should you reevaluate your career?

More often than most people do. You might choose a path at 18, but you should ask yourself again at 25, 30, 35 and 40 whether you're happy and whether the work is still fulfilling. If the answer is yes, keep going. If it's no, it's not too late to pivot.

Does your job have to be your passion?

No. Your job doesn't have to be the thing you love most, and sometimes turning a passion into a job drains the joy out of it. What matters is whether your job supports the life you want. If a job gives you the schedule, flexibility or income to do what lights you up, that's a great fit.

How do I figure out my career non-negotiables?

Think about what would leave a hole in your life if it were missing. That might be flexibility, travel, being at your kids' activities, refusing an hour-long commute, living near family or owning a home. Once you know your non-negotiables, stack every career opportunity against them and cut the ones that don't fit.

Why is The Corporate Burnouts Podcast ending?

Because it did what it was supposed to do. Mandy Alt and Mandy Holt used the show to work through their own corporate burnout, and along the way they changed their lives so much that corporate burnout isn't their daily story anymore. Rather than fake it or run out of genuine things to say, they chose to end the show on a high note after 85 episodes.

Will there be new episodes of The Corporate Burnouts Podcast?

Not right now. Episode 85 is the final episode, but all 85 episodes are still available to listen to. Mandy and Mandy haven't ruled out podcasting together again someday, and if enough listeners want it, they'll start a Corporate Burnouts Facebook group to keep the community going.

How do you know when it's time to let go of something you love?

Pay attention to when it stops feeling authentic to the life you're living. If you have to put yourself in a completely different headspace to show up for it, or you'd have to fake caring to keep it going, that's a sign. Leaving while you're still proud of it, and while people still want you there, is better than staying until it runs its course.

Why is it so hard to walk away from something that's part of your identity?

Because titles, businesses and accomplishments can quietly become who we think we are. Mandy Alt realized she'd held on to the podcast a little longer because she didn't want to stop being a podcaster. Separating who you are from what you produce is what makes it possible to walk away without feeling like you've lost yourself.

What should listeners do now that the podcast is ending?

Keep having the conversations. Mandy Holt encourages anyone who still needs this to start talking it through out loud, even by starting a podcast of their own, because working through it yourself is how real change happens. The full back catalog is still available, and listeners can vote for a Corporate Burnouts Facebook group to share wins, work struggles and permission to go have fun.
